OHSAS 18001:1999 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. The Specification is a management system specification that responds to health and safety management in the same way that ISO 9001 responds to Quality Management and ISO 14001 responds to Environmental Management. In fact OHSAS is almost identical to ISO 14001 except that the words ‘Health and Safety’ take the place of ‘Environment’.

OHSAS 18001 is really useful where companies have an integrated Quality, Environmental and Health & Safety System. In this case the Certification Body can certify the integrated Management System. However, some companies that may have particular safety concerns or issues, or where safety is a political issue, are choosing to become certificated only to OHSAS 18001.

Velosi is able to carry out audits to the standard and issue a certificate confirming Compliance. However, it should be noted that OHSAS 18001 has not been recognised as a National or International Standard. Because it has not been adopted as a National or International Standard, there is no mechanism for the Certification Bodies to be accredited for certification to OHSAS 18001. Consequently, certification to OHSAS is non-accredited.

Nevertheless, OHSAS 18001 is widely used across Europe and the Middle East and is spreading across the world; it is available in several different languages.
