Long Range UT - 29 Jan 2010
Kurtec ( A Velosi Group Company) adds LRUT to its portfolio of services.
During the1st quarter of 2009 Kurtec Inspection Services part of the VELOSI group, invested in a Teletest Focus unit to perform Long Range UT guide wave inspection. This was a first for Kurtec and as such a senior level II inspector from TWI (The Welding Institute,) in the UK was commissioned to guide our personnel in the field on how to work with the system and ensure the inspection was completed to a high standard. The project lasted 2 weeks and included road crossings, bund lines and above ground piping. During the project the TWI inspector trained 4 inspectors in the field ensured they had a thorough grounding and knowledge of the principles of the techniques involved.
On the back of this project Kurtec organised a LRUT level I training course in their Kuala Lumpur office run by TWI. The LRUT courses of TWI are international approved CSWIP courses available in level I and level II courses (CSWIP-ES-12-04). A 6” test pipe was set up in the office for testing purposes during the course which was taken by 4 staff inspectors with UT level I. Level I is a general course on the principles and behaviour of sound and ultrasonic waves, how to choose your test location and test and use the equipment. All 4 inspectors passed with a score of 100%, which apparently was the first time ever in TWI history.
On the back of this addition to the Kurtec services they were subsequently awarded a contract to inspect above ground jetty lines in a variety of diameters for a 2 month period. The results were checked by a senior level II of TWI before handing over to the client. Several projects were completed in this matter to make sure our inspectors were interpreting correctly.
Kurtec then organised a CSWIP -LRUT level II course in Malaysia in Nov. 2009. Three staff Inspectors were also sent from another VELOSI group company, Steel Test, of South Africa. The level II course is much more intensive, focussing on the factors influencing test conditions and principles of interpretation and reporting. Both courses last 5 days and were followed by an exam including several tests with a variety of scope that needed to be interpreted. There are only 100 people worldwide with the CSWIP LRIT Level II qualification. Having a team of fully qualified level II LRUT inspectors and both GUL units as well as a Teletest Focus unit within the group is a good basis to allow the group to win larger projects. |
