The Ministry of Development, through the Construction Planning and Research Unit (CPRU), yesterday invited a certification company from Malaysia, Velosi Sdn Bhd, to present a briefing on the importance of obtaining certification for lifting equipment, focusing mainly towards the construction industry.
More than 70 participants from relevant departments. registered consultants and contractors were invited to attend the briefing which was held at the Ministry\'s Trade Skill Testing and Training Centre at the Old Airport in Berakas.
The ministry reminded stakeholders of the construction industry regarding the directive to all contractors to certify their cranes and lifting appliances to go through examinations and tests as well as certificates by one of the three \'third-party checker\' firms appointed by the ministry, before entering construction sites.
Inspections on the machinery and appliances are made to ensure that the equipment are in satisfactory condition for continued safe operation and to comply with the requirements of the lifting appliance procedures in the Guidance Document (GD9) issued by the Ministry of Development. GD9 provides the basic instruction for owners of cranes and lifting equipment to ensure all operators must have full regard and concern for the public and workers\' safety on construction sites. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin |
